Fans of Starz‘s new series “Outlander” can now follow along with the characters’ adventures through a new interactive map from VisitScotland. The map and companion launched today as part of the national tourism organisation’s larger marketing campaign titled “Scotland: The Land That Inspired Outlander.”
The online guide highlights real locations featured in Diana Gabaldon’s first two “Outlander” novels, as well as attractions and historical sites that have a strong connection the the Scotland-set series.
“Our new map and itinerary is the perfect way for fans of the ‘Outlander’ books to follow in the footsteps of Jamie and Claire and this interest is only set to grow with the release of the television series,” said Mike Cantlay, chairman of VisitScotland. “As well as highlighting real locations that feature in the books, our map and itinerary also reveal the best places for visitors to trace their ancestry, learn about the Jacobite Uprising, and discover the real Scotland — the land that inspired ‘Outlander.'”

The historical television series is based on Gabaldon’s bestselling books, with a sixteen-episode first season set in the Highlands of Scotland. “Outlander” follows Claire Randall (Caitriona Balfe), a married English combat nurse from 1945 who mysteriously travels back in time to 18th-century Scotland. There, she meets Jamie (Sam Heughan), a chivalrous warrior.
“This country has a particular quality to it. There is a particular quality to the light, the grass, even the trees. The landscape itself is a character in the show,” said Ron Moore, executive producer of the Starz drama.
Added Balfe, “We traveled the length and breadth of Scotland and were filming in the most beautiful places so I can’t imagine people won’t come away with an idea of how beautiful Scotland is.”
To tout the series and landscape, several “Outlander” tours already run in Scotland, with a new “Blazing the Jamie and Claire Trail” tour set to launch in October from Edinburgh-based Rabbie’s Small Group Tours.
The map and travelers’ itinerary can be found at VisitScotland’s “Outlander” site.
